Fifteen years is how long I’ve been involved in the rheumatology field. As a 27-year-old barman, I was pretty ignorant of the vast of amount of information, research, medication, funding, services and a little bit of patient engagement that was going on all around me in rheumatology, alongside cardiovascular care, cancer care and beyond.

It’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks and trying to take stock of the changes in my life has taken some time. Two months ago, I worked for Arthritis Ireland, and I was preparing to go to my last EULAR Congress as a member of the EULAR PARE Community.

Ten years ago this very night, I launched my debut novel, The Confessional in the pub I had stopped working in five years previously due to losing my battle with rheumatoid arthritis. While in 2016 I thought a writing career may lie ahead of me, I now embark on what I believe is my eighth career. Given that I use skills I've honed across every aspect of my life to this point, this may be the career move that sticks.
